Since video typically occupies gigabytes of storage space,
cd media, with capacities measured in hundreds of megabytes,
are often of limited use for archiving video material. On
the other hand, if you are the least bit concerned about
any of this, spend the extra $20 and buy from a name you
know and trust. Sound is recorded on vinyl records by creating
grooves on the record, which are then read by a stylus,
or phonograph needle. Thermal printers are also much faster
than inkjet.
Rca and philips have good examples of this feature. These
days, most burners are packaged with one or more music programs,
but you can also buy programs or download them over the internet.
Like a vcr, a dvd recorder has a built-in tv tuner, and a clock/timer
for unattended recording. Also widely used are automated products
incorporating robotic disc handling systems which mechanically
load and unload one or more recorders.
The last section, we saw that conventional cds store digital
data as a pattern of bumps and flat areas, arranged in a long
spiral track. This means it would take you about 60 minutes
to record 60 minutes of music. As with cd-rs, the read laser
does not have enough power to change the state of the material
in the recording layer -- it's a lot weaker than the write laser.
