Versatile/Video Disc, DVD-R stands for DVD Recordable media and DVD-RW means
DVD rewriteable media. You can tell the difference between a DVD-R and a
CD-R by the color on the bottom of the disc. A DVD-R has a purplish tint,
whereas the CD-R is either light green in the case of Ritek, light blue in the
case of Taiyo Yuden and some disc like Prodisc have a silver reflective bottom.
A DVD-R can store up to 2 hours of DVD-Video or 4.7 GB of data. When burning
a DVD one must allow for room at the end of the disc to create a table of
contents or about .05 GB of data. The DVD-R can also store audio tracks on
the same disc. These disc can also accomodate Dolby Digital, a menu subtitles
and still pictures. All of thse formats can be played by many standalone DVD
players and most DVD-ROMs. Not all DVD Roms or DVD readers can read every
type of DVD-R manufactured.
There are three types of DVD Recording standards, DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD+R. Thse
formats are all compatible with most standalone DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
