CD glass mastering requires a laser beam recorder whereby a laser is used to
expose minute areas of a photo-resist layer on top of a rotating glass master
disc. The lengths and spacing of these areas is defined by the data to be
stored on the disc. The areas are then developed to form pits and coated in
a thin layer of nickel, on which a nickel Father is grown using an
electroforming process.
A Mother is then grown from the Father and the stampers grown from the Mother.
The premastered data for the CD to be mastered is used as the input data during
the glass mastering process. The first stage in producing CD and DVD discs
is injection molding, which uses the stamper to create the plastic discs or
substrates containing the pits. Optical grade poly-resin is first 'baked' to
remove any moisture and is injection molded in a high pressure molding machine
using the stamper mounted in the mould fixed to the press.
This mold is in two parts and provides a cavity which ensures that perfectly
molded discs are produced with the correct dimensions every time. One half
of the mold contains the stamper while the other half contains the mirror block
to ensure a smooth surface. The hydraulic press applies a force to the two halves
of the mold which are closed. Molten polycarbonate is then injected into the cavity
and held in place by the applied pressure while the disc cools and solidifies.
During cooling the center hole is punched. After cooling, the press opens and the
pressed disc is transferred by robot arms to a conveyor to allow the disc to cool
before the next stage. Molding of CDs which meet the CD specification, requires
stable processes with the machines setup correctly.
